Adderall is a prescription medicine used for treating a medical condition called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adults. It also is used for treating narcolepsy and daytime sleepiness. Adderall was approved by the FDA in the year 1960. Adderall is a single entity med that comprises of neutral sulfate salts of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine are the active components in Adderall and they are the central nervous system stimulants. In addition to the active ingredients, Adderall also comprises of several inactive compounds like colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose and lactitol and various other ingredients. The Adderall pills of the dosage strength 5mg appear to be as white to off white tablets and have no colored additives. While the Adderall 7.5mg and 10mg pills are in blue color and the 12.5mg, 15mg, 20mg and 30mg Adderall pills appear in yellow color as color additive.
How Adderall works?
This med is known to work by altering the chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. It increases the levels of chemicals in the brain i.e. dopamine which stimulates the functioning of the brain. This stimulation thus occurring produces a calming effect and helps people with ADHD to develop concentration and increases their ability to focus at the work they do.
Adderall dosage and administration
This drug can be taken orally irrespective of having had food or not. It is best to take the first dose when you wake up in the morning. You should not crush, break or chew the Adderall pills. You can swallow the tablet as a whole with a glass of water. Adderall is also available as Adderall XR or Extended Release Capsules. The Adderall XR pills can also be swallowed as a whole. To make the swallowing easier, you can open the capsule and sprinkle the med into a spoonful of applesauce. You need to swallow this right away without chewing. This mixture should not be kept to be used later. When taking Adderall, your doctor would monitor your heart rate, blood pressure on a regular basis. The dosage might be titrated depending upon your medical condition, age and your response to the drug.
Missed and Overdose
Take the Adderall pills at the same time each day so as to remember them taking on time daily. If you have missed any dose of Adderall, then it is better to take it as soon as you remember. In case if it is already time for the next dose, then it is better to skip the missed dose and carry on with the scheduled dose. - Cold or allergy pills that contain decongestant
- Blood thinner like warfarin
- Blood pressure meds etc.
Inform your doctor about all the drugs you are taking or have taken in the past including any over the counter pills, prescription meds, natural or herbal products so as to let the doctor analyze your medical condition.
Do not include any fruit juices or Vitamin C at the same time when you take Adderall. Doing so will make your body absorb less of the med. This drug has the ability to impair your thinking or reactions, so be careful when you drive or when you do any important activities that requires you to be alert.
